Rattan has long been a staple in the world of furniture, perfectly complementing styles ranging from Bohemian and Scandinavian to modern minimalism. Indonesia alone produces approximately 80% of the world’s raw rattan. However, not all rattan is created equal.
Each species of rattan possesses unique characteristics, from its level of flexibility to its overall durability. Here are the most common types of rattan used in furniture manufacturing.
1.Manau Rattan (The King of Rattan)
Manau Rattan is the most popular variety and is widely considered to be of the highest quality. Native to the forests of Sumatra and Kalimantan, this type is known for its large diameter and exceptionally strong stalks.
a. Key Characteristics: Large diameter (approx. 25–50 mm), dense, and highly resistant to breakage.
b. Best For: Ideal for the primary framework of chairs, tables, or bed frames due to its ability to support heavy weight.
2. Batang Rattan (Semambu Rattan)
Similar to Manau, Batang Rattan has a slightly different texture and longer internodes (the sections between joints).
a. Key Characteristics: Upright, hard stems with a beautiful yellowish-brown hue once cleaned.
b. Best For: Frequently used for furniture with straight-line designs, such as table legs or chair backrests.
3. Sega Rattan
If you see fine, glossy weaving on dining chairs or cabinet door panels, it is most likely Sega Rattan.
a. Key Characteristics: Small diameter with a naturally smooth and shiny skin. It has high elasticity, making it easy to weave.
b. Best For: Used as weaving material or decorative overlays on furniture surfaces.
4. Mandola Rattan
This type is unique because its texture is softer than Manau, yet it remains remarkably durable.
a. Key Characteristics: The stalks tend to be whiter and cleaner in appearance.
b. Best For: Often the preferred choice for indoor furniture that emphasizes a clean, elegant, and bright look.
5. Kubu Rattan (Kubu Grey)
Currently, furniture with a “rustic” or “weathered” look is trending. This aesthetic is typically achieved using Kubu Rattan.
a. Key Characteristics: Naturally grayish in color due to a process where the rattan is soaked in mud before processing. It is very sturdy and thick.
b. Best For: Extremely popular for large baskets, heavy armchairs, and robust patio furniture.
Why Choose Natural Rattan?
Beyond its warm aesthetic, choosing natural rattan means supporting renewable materials. Rattan grows much faster than hardwoods, making it a more environmentally friendly and sustainable choice.
Maintenance Tip: To ensure your rattan furniture lasts, avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight and heavy rain. Simply clean off dust with a soft brush or a slightly damp cloth on a regular basis.
